4-7-8 Breathing to Calm the Nervous System

I had the opportunity to hold baby goats during our last yoga retreat at Lotus Ranch. As this sweet baby nuzzled into me I could feel the beating of its heart against mine. A sense of relaxation and peace swept over me cuddling with this darling creature.

Holding an animal can be so incredibly calming for the nervous system. That is why we see so many support animals around airports, restaurants and stores. Our energy aligns with the relaxed energy of the animal and we begin to release our tension and worries.

There are many methods to regulating the nervous system. One tool is called 4-7-8 breathing. When we make the exhale longer than the inhale, we turn on the parasympathetic nervous system, which allows our body and mind to relax. This breath is perfect for bedtime, if you are in a stressful situation or just need a moment to calm your mind.
