This week my husband, Scott, and I headed down to San Antonio for a night to celebrate his birthday. While we walked around the grounds of the resort, we saw that they had a wave pool for surfing.
It looked like fun and we signed up before we could change out minds. Next thing I knew I was standing on a mini surf board trying to balance on a powerful jet of water that created my wave.
I started off holding my instructor’s hands. When I felt stable he tossed me a rope to help me maneuver right and left on the wave. Just when I thought I was starting to get it, he let go of the rope.
I really wish the next part was captured on video as my board caught an edge. I did a massive belly flop forward and was immediately catapulted by the force of the wave. It flopped me around like a rag doll and shot me up a ramp, where I laid for a minute checking to see if all my parts were in tact.
Aside from my bathing suit twisted sideways (and grateful the instructor had suggested I wear a t-shirt over my bikini) there seemed to be no major injuries.
Scott had much better balance than me, but ultimately ended up in a similar discombobulated pile at the top of the ramp. We both laughed at ourselves and were grateful for no broken bones.
Although I felt fine that day, I woke up feeling very stiff in my almost 50 year old body. I was sore in muscles that I didn’t even know existed. I sensed a tweak in my back and before it could grow I did some yoga to address the congestion in this area.
I thought I would share a simple yoga practice to maintain the health and well-being of your entire back just in case you want to engage in a “rock your body” activity.
This week’s 13 minute Hatha Yoga Class, Yoga for Stretching the Back, is all about creating space in the lower, mid and upper back. Through simple postures like supine and seated twists and cat/cow variations, we will relieve tension and congestion in this area. Yoga with Meditation Mutha is for everyBODY. Please join me in this opportunity to maintain a health back and spine. Enjoy!
