Staying Cool in the Summer Heat – Yoga with Meditation Mutha

This is the first year in a very long time that Austin has had a true spring. Cooler temps and regular rain have made my yard so happy. Everything is green and growing beautifully. Even the birds seem to be singing more cheerfully.

That being said, the heat has arrived in Central Texas. Early day temperatures start in the mid 80’s and the humidity is so high that I have a full on afro by the end of my morning run. The heat is on for summer!

If you have not had the opportunity to acclimate to warmer temperatures and are feeling a little over heated, there are several things you can do to cool your body and your mind. Eating cooling foods such as watermelon and cucumber can assist in reducing your internal body temperature. Taking cold showers or baths can also help to dissipate heat.

In yoga, one of my favorite postures to release body heat is diamond pose because it exposes the femoral artery. If you lay on your back and place your legs in a diamond shape with knees falling to the sides you may feel a lot of heat rising off if your hip crease. Bringing your hands behind your head to expose your armpits adds another way to cool the body.
