Feeling Good in Your Body at Every Age – Yoga with Meditation Mutha

I had the opportunity to teach yoga for week at a resort in Cancun. It was so fun to hold space for attendees from all around the world. One morning a woman in her 70’s strutted into class with total sass and said “I’m not a yogi, I’m just here to look like you!” As we were all laughing, she went on to tell the group how she stays active, young and vibrant.

One of her biggest secrets to the fountain of youth is a great attitude. She said having a positive outlook on life and staying hopeful is the number one reason why she still maintains an excellent quality of life into her golden years. I absolutely fell in love with her magnetic energy.

As she moved through her first yoga class, I observed how she took time to tune into how her body was feeling and made modifications that suited her in the moment. After we finished I asked her how she felt. She said she was really proud of herself for trying something new and felt a positive difference in her body and mind.

This woman’s amazing perspective on life, curiosity to try something out of her comfort zone and light-hearted, social engagement with others are all excellent examples of continuing to bring spice into your life at any age.

Just like your mind, your body needs a little encouragement to stay healthy and fit as you age. It may be a benefit to incorporate stretching into your daily routine to keep your muscles pliable. Maybe adding some balancing exercises for stabilization would be a good idea. I personally have changed my entire fitness routine to add functional movements that assist in stability and balance, so I can do the things I love for the rest of my life.

One area of the body that is often neglected and imperative for functional health is your hip flexor muscles. These babies are located right at your hip crease and help to lift your leg up so you can walk and run safely.
