On my driver’s license it says that I am 5’7″. Ever since I was in high school I have been living the identity of a five foot seven inch woman. So, when I went to a doctor’s appointment recently, I could not believe it when they said I was 5’6″. I protested and said that can’t be right. I had the nurse remeasure me and sure enough it said the same length.
It messed with my mind a little because I always felt like I was the taller height. So much so that when I got home I stood against a wall and had my daughter measure me with a tape measure. To my disappointment my newly discovered height was confirmed.
“Where did the inch go? Did I ever have it or did I just round up when I registered for my license?” I wondered.
As we age, many of us experience compression of the spine due to continuous impact, weight gain and gravity over time. The effect is shrinkage and I don’t mean what happens when you get into cold water. I mean we lose height.
Luckily, there are things you can do to prevent compression from happening or stop it in its tracks. Tractioning out the spine allows you to create space between each vertebrae and decompress tension in the back. It is a great way to address low back pain and to proactively maintain a healthy spine.
