Resetting Your Nervous System – Yoga with Meditation Mutha

    resetting your nervous system

resetting your nervous system. One of my favorite things to observe when I am teaching a week-long yoga retreat at a tropical, international destination is the predictable pattern attendees go through to unwind from their daily lives. People arrive to the experience after a day of travel feeling a lot of different emotions; excitement, fear of the unknown, overwhelmed. They step out onto the yoga deck with a 270 degree view of the ocean overlooking a vibrant jungle and I can physically see them start to relax.

The first day they are still very tethered to their life at home, calling their family, checking their email and scrolling through social media. By the second day, they sink a little more deeply into their peaceful surroundings and only use their phones for pictures. By the third day they leave their phone in their room, disconnect completely and fully surrender to the experience.

There is a process to let go of attachment to all the stimuli in our lives and drop into the present moment. We are constantly bombarded by information, responsibility and stress. Over time, our nervous systems can become overwhelmed making it a challenge to relax under any circumstances.

Therefore, it is imperative that we take time to intentionally reset our body and mind and decompress from our daily lives. One way of doing this is by taking ourselves away from our daily stresses which is a major reason why people go on vacation. Retreat vacations are the perfect opportunity to calm our soul and nourish our body and mind.
