There is nothing like cuddling with a white, fluffy puppy to bring your blood pressure down and brighten your mood. Jimmy Kibble, our new little buddy, has brought so much joy into our home since we have been back from our year-long trip around the world.
His super easy going, playful spirit reminds me how much our attitude about life influences our overall physical and mental well-being. Our mind plays such a significant role in how our body responds to our inside and outside environment.
Under stressful conditions, the mind kicks into fight or flight mode, adrenaline and cortisol start pumping through our system and our body thinks it’s under attack. This is OK when it is an acute circumstance. For instance, your sympathetic nervous system is where you want to be when you jump onto the sidewalk to avoid a crazy driver coming around the corner.
But, with so much stimulus and pressure in our lives, our minds can not turn off the survival reflex and we end up residing in this heightened state of tension. This condition can cause hormone imbalances and organ dysfunction resulting in ailments.
Whether you are nursing a summer cold, dealing with a more serious disease or just want to be proactive with your overall well-being, the condition of the mind is a great place to start.
This week’s FREE 20-minute floor yoga class, Yoga for Good Health, is all about taking a holistic approach to quality health by incorporating both the body and mind. Through energy movement, visualization and stimulating the lymph system and organs that support overall well-being, you will be empowered to enhance your current health and be proactive about your future physical and mental condition.
