My absolute favorite Austin tradition, Eeyore’s Birthday, was this past weekend. Yes, it is a festival to celebrate Eeyore the donkey from Winnie the Pooh and is the epitome of the slogan “Keep Austin Weird”.
A plethora of wild and fairy-like costumes along with plenty of painted boobies and men wearing string thongs make it a site to be seen.
A huge drum circle sits right in the middle of the park with hundreds of people joining in to feel the thump of the rhythms and that is the part that calls to my inner hippie.
I arrived early and plopped my blanket down on the edge of the dancers as the beat lured me in to play my djembe drum. Then, the tribal rhythm overpowered my senses and I was called to dance… and dance I did for about five hours strait! Talk about a cardio workout!
The continuous movement made me feel so energized that I was on a physical and mental high for hours afterward. The positive effects of the prolonged swinging of my hips and pounding of my feet reminded me how important consistent cardiovascular exercise is for our existence.
Cardiovascular exercise gets our heart pumping and our blood flowing throughout our bodies. It sends fresh oxygen and blood to the brain to enhance memory and creativity. It helps reduce swelling and inflammation by pushing pooled blood and stagnant energy from the feet back up to the heart so it can circulate our system and provide us with nourishment.
If you find yourself sitting or standing for long periods of time, it is especially important to incorporate cardiovascular exercise into a daily routine.
