The Soothing Sounds of Nature – Yoga with Meditation Mutha

There is a distinct energy shift when transitioning from spending five days surrounded by the purest form of nature in the middle of the Serengeti to the hustle and bustle of Arusha, a major city in Tanzania. A notable contrast is apparent when all you can hear for miles is the call of the wild and the breeze blowing through the grassy plains versus the chaotic sounds of cars weaving around an endless amount of people scurrying through their day.

I felt a very apparent change in my nervous system as we slowly made our way from the serenity of the national park into the confusion of this urban area. My body began to tense and my heartrate increased as we dodged motorcycles, bicyclists and pedestrians weaving in between the heavy traffic.

That’s not to say bouncing down a dirt road on safari trying to avoid major pot holes and flooding doesn’t get your blood pumping. But, this type of excitement hits your body at a different level.

Tucked deeply in the full body experience of nature, protected from the incessant influx of modern stimuli reminds me how imperative it is that we take the time to get outside in a quiet setting, pause and just listen. Spending just a few moments of absorbing the sounds of nature has an incredible calming effect on the body and mind.
