Living in the Present Moment – Yoga with Meditation Mutha

We are right in the middle of a journey of a lifetime at our incredible Yoga and Safari Retreat in Tanzania, Africa. I am so grateful to partner with the fabulous Gabriele Brown with Urth Expedition for the second year in a row to hold this amazing experience!

During the planning phase of the retreat, we both agreed that we wanted to provide an opportunity for attendees to be immersed in the culture of the Maasai people, who are a primitive tribe in Africa. Gabriele chose an incredible space for us to learn about the Maasai people and way of living at the Original Maasai Lodge.

Here we learned about the local food and engaged in a traditional barbeque where we ate goat, drank a medicinal soup made from goat guts and tasted cow blood which is believed to be very healing. We participated in ceremonial dance and song and discovered the way of the Maasai people. We went on a guided hike to educate ourselves about medicinal plants found in the bush.

On our trek we had the opportunity to ask many questions to our Maasai guide. One of the inquiries was about the beliefs the native people have pertaining to where you go after you die. Our leader explained that their religion is nature and if you are deemed a “good” person then you will come back to earth in another life. He went on to explain the extreme importance in living your life with integrity, so you have another chance here on this planet.

In doing so, he shared that the Maasai people focus on living in the present moment to truly honor nature and deeply engage with life around them.

The concept of being present is easier said than done in the Western world. Modern society has been enveloped in endless distractions that take us away from coming into the present. Existing in the present moment means being aware of the here and now.
