Living a Meaningful Life – Yoga with Meditation Mutha

Well, it took me 50 years and I finally got my first tattoo! I have always wanted a tattoo my whole adult life. “So, what took you so long?” you might ask. I wanted to make sure that if I was going to mark my body permanently that the symbol had meaning to me.

I told my husband Scott that I would get a tattoo after one of the loves of my life, our first dog Calle, passed. I never ended up getting one then, but Scott did. He added a picture of Calle chilling by the ocean in a beach chair. Same thing happened when our cat passed away. No marks on my body, but my husband branded a picture of the kitty hanging in a palm tree overlooking our dog. And, most recently when my dad passed away, Scott honored my dad by inscribing his name amongst the already established scenery of his right arm with not a single scribble on my body.

I had a vision of what I wanted my first tattoo to look like, but could not piece all of the details together. One day this year, I was walking in downtown Austin and saw a mural of a red-tailed hawk feather that inspired the creation that is on my arm today.

I met with Megan at Venice Tattoo to show her the picture and talk about all of the meaningful details I wanted to incorporate into the tattoo. She took my ideas and added her artistic talent to develop the final creation, which far exceeded my initial vision.

Every part of the tattoo has meaning. The feather represents my animal totem. The lightening bolt symbolizes the energy of my dad, which is located at the root chakra and represents the security I felt in childhood. The initials of my immediate family are weaved into the pattern of the feather. The energy wrapping around the feather represents the freedom of my air sign and the power to soar. And the location on my left inner forearm is a representation of the sacred feminine.

We all have an opportunity to weave meaning into every aspect of our lives. When we do things with intention we move from the mundane to the divine.

Next time you are preparing a meal, pause to plant your love into every delicious bite. Water your lawn and take time to give thanks to the land that you are standing on. Simple acts like these can elevate the experiences in your life.
