Developing Awareness – Yoga with Meditation Mutha

I spent a fabulous week in Southern California escaping the Texas heat. The weather was absolutely wonderful with a high of 75 degrees and barely a drop of humidity in the air. These type of lovely conditions are what I like to call “perfect breathing weather”.

The crisp air motivated me to wake up at sunrise and go for a run. I looked for my earbuds as I headed out the door, but couldn’t find them anywhere. So, instead of zoning out to some music or chants as I moved, I had the opportunity to take in the world around me.

Without the distraction of music, the sound of the ocean waves crashing on the beach and the cool sand in between my toes inspired me to tune into all my senses. The smell of the salty air and the feel of the warm sun on my back brought my awareness to the present moment where I was able to absorb all the beauty around me.

I felt so energized by the experience that I continued to run all the way down to the end of the beach. Ultimately, I completed about 8 miles, which is more than double what I normally run in a day.

Tuning into your surroundings and fully absorbing the experience allows you to bring your awareness into the present. And, when you reside in the present your life becomes more nourishing. You enjoy each event as it appears before you. And, you live a truly meaningful life because you recognize the purpose in everything.

Next time you get together with a group of friends or family, try shutting off your cell phone and take time to deeply engage in conversation. Leave your earbuds at home when you go for a walk/run and open your senses to the world around you. You may just find an increased level of satisfaction in everything you do.

This week’s yoga class will help you tune into your body and mind and enhance your awareness.

    YOGA FOR DEVELOPING AWARENESS

This week’s 23-minute floor yoga class, Yoga for Developing Awareness, is all about tuning into sensations in the body. We will use a racket ball or tennis ball to do pressure point self-massage and release tension in the shoulders, upper back and hips. We will then bring awareness to the differences between our right and left sides. Yoga with Meditation Mutha is for everyBODY. Please join me in this opportunity to observe ourselves more deeply. Enjoy!
