Addressing Insomnia – Yoga with Meditation Mutha

We have all been a witness to it. It’s three o’clock in the morning, your mind is racing out of control about the silliest thoughts and you can not fall asleep. Whether it is due to stress, hormone shifts or too much caffeine close to bedtime, insomnia is extremely frustrating.

I have recently experienced sleeplessness due to hormone changes where I wake up at four o’clock in the morning every day and it is no fun. The days of hitting the pillow and waking up eight hours later totally refreshed have been few and far between lately. One great thing is I have been using this quiet time to be super productive. Although I much rather catch some solid z’s.

If you are experiencing the challenge of sleepless nights, you are not alone. Increased daily stresses contribute to the astounding rate of over 70 million Americans who report having a sleep disorder.

Along side a quality diet and consistent exercise, a good night sleep is one of the top factors in maintaining good health. There are many tools you can use to help you fall asleep and stay asleep.

Meditating right before bedtime can assist the mind in unwinding from the day. Taking a few moments to breathe through the nose, slow the breath down and lengthen the exhale can shift your nervous system into a rest and digest state. In addition, small movements that focus on forward folds will allow your body to move into a relaxed state in preparation for deep sleep.
