The Benefits of Socializing – Yoga with Meditation Mutha

Have you ever heard of a Blue Zone? Blue Zones are five areas across the planet where they have the highest concentration of centenarians in the world. That’s right, a particular region of Japan, Italy, Costa Rica, Greece and California have the most humans living over 100 years old!

Not only do Blue Zones account for longevity, but a high quality of life as well. What do these areas have in common? National Geographic found this phenomenon so interesting that they spent several years researching the reasons behind their fountain of youth. What they found was amazing!

People who live in Blue Zones eat mostly a plant-based diet. They exercise, not at the gym, but in the daily movement of living, like walking to the grocery store or gardening. They have a deep sense of purpose for their lives. They feel like they belong to a community. And, the one I find most interesting is that they drink a moderate amount of alcohol every day.

One might think that a glass of red wine per day is what contributes to their long life span. In actuality, it is congregating with friends and family in the evenings to unwind with a drink after an active day that brings the true health benefits. Not only do they take time for relaxation, but they intentionally gather with others to socialize, laugh and enjoy each other’s company. This is the way of the Blue Zones.

Socializing has some incredible health benefits. Humans are innately social beings. Studies show that when you have healthy interactions with friends, family, neighbors, co-workers and romantic partners you are happier and have fewer health problems.

Here are some reasons why… Socializing increases endorphins, which elevate mood and reduce stress. Increased social interactions provide a feeling of belonging and support from others, providing a sense of purpose. Being social strengthens your immune system by lowering blood pressure, reducing inflammation and allowing you to recover from ailment quicker. Connecting with others stimulates brain activity and slows cognitive decline.

So, as you can see, socializing can provide a world of benefits for a healthy body and mind!
