breathing to relax the nervous system

Relaxing Your Nervous System – Yoga with Meditation Mutha

The political landscape over the past several months has felt very heavy and intense. No wonder why there were so many different emotions that sprouted from last Tuesdays big election news.

The presidential election results brought some people hope and others complete despair. For many under disbelief of the outcome it felt like the world was ending. This reaction is absolutely normal, considering all of the heightened stress that was delivered to Americans through social media, news and political banter. When your nervous system is taxed for long periods of time there is bound to be a breaking point.

The good news is with time, we can regulate our nervous system, recalibrate our emotions and continue to live a meaningful and quality life. The breath is a tremendous tool that we can use to bring our physical and mental bodies back to center.

Lengthening the exhale helps us to move into our parasympathetic nervous system, bringing us into a rest and digest mode for repair and recovery.
