Maintaining Range of Motion as You Age – Yoga with Meditation Mutha

One of my absolute passions is dancing, especially partner dancing such as salsa, two-step and swing. It is an amazing feeling when two people come together as the music moves you into a state of flow.

Every partner has a different style, which provides an excellent challenge to the “follow” to just release into the lead’s guidance of subtle hand placement and shift in direction. Some leads realize that less is more and are extremely effective at leading with the slightest touch. While others tend to have a firmer grip. I am always more cautious of dancers who hold my hand too tight for fear of tweaking my shoulder during a turn.

To prevent injury and continue to do what I love for the rest of my life, I have started to incorporate range of motion exercises into my workout routine. I love taking very light weights and working with the full mobility of my shoulders to build strength and flexibility in my joints.

It is so important to maintain range of motion in your joints, particularly in your shoulders and hips. As you age, the muscles and tendons become dehydrated and tend to tighten and shrink. Working with daily range of motion movement will help you to stay mobile and healthy your entire life.
