Yoga for Connecting with Yourself

As part of our year-long travel around the world, my family and I have had the fortunate experience to make it to Mendoza, Argentina.  I have to say this may be my new favorite city so far.

Mendoza is only a short one-hour flight from Santiago, Chile, and provides a very different scene.  Set at the base of the Andes Mountains, this town has it all, gorgeous views, beautiful parks and plazas, delicious food with an Italian influence, incredible vineyards and wines and it’s so affordable.

But, my favorite thing about Mendoza and Argentina is their daily routine.  They go to work and school in the morning and then the whole world closes down between 1pm and 5pm for a siesta.  It took us several days of searching for a late lunch, only to find out nothing is open, to figure this out.

And then suddenly, at 5pm, something beautiful happens.  Everyone comes out from their hiding places and they converge at the plazas and parks for some mate tea, sweets and conversation.  Our third day in Argentina, we finally got clued in and decided to head out in the late afternoon like the locals.

I sat on a grassy hill, as my daughter fed hot dogs to the street dogs and observed the people.  I watched true connection between each other.  Friends gathered for laughs and munchies after taking a few tokes of weed.  Couples sat close together for some deep conversation or more often extreme heavy petting.  And families smiled at their children playing on the swings or running wildly through the park.

I witnessed people at their finest, truly present in the moment enjoying themselves and each other.  I can’t think of a better way to incorporate connection and community into your life than making this routine part of your daily practice.

Being present and connecting with another human being is the biggest gift you can give to a friend.  Therefore, I thought I would center this week’s yoga class on connecting with your best friend, YOU!
