Honoring Your Ancestors – Yoga with Meditation Mutha

This week is coming up on the anniversary of my dad’s passing. I truly can not believe that it has been a year since I hugged my dad. The time has gone by so fast.

My family and I took a trip to Colorado to honor my dad’s wishes of spreading his ashes at the top of a ski mountain. He was an avid skier and taught my brother and I how to ski. He had a hug influence on my two little nephews’ love for skiing as well.

Upon arrival, we immediately started receiving signs from my dad. The first was literally a physical sign that was hanging up in our Airbnb of an old ski trail called “Ellen’s Way”, which is my mom’s name. We all smiled and felt his energy around us.

While waiting at the bottom of the slopes we came across a huge dog and their owner. My mom walked up to say hi and the dog put his paw on my mom’s shoulder and started kissing her. We asked the dog’s name. Not surprising, it was Max, my dad’s name. Another sign of his presence.

Then, at the top of the mountain we were looking for the perfect place to spread his ashes. As we were standing there, my sister-in-law pointed to a trail sign called Poppy Fields. All the grandkids affectionately called my dad Poppy, so we knew that was the perfect place to set him free.

As I stood amongst the tall pines with his ashes in my hand I reflected back on all the lessons my dad generously passed on to me throughout my whole life. It felt peaceful to throw the ashes in the air and see the wind whip them around, knowing that he was returning back to the universe. It was an honor to carry out his final wishes and I am so grateful to be a part of his transition.

Whether you have lost a loved one recently or it has been years since you held them in your arms, it is so important to continuously honor their life to keep their energy alive.
